Morsel Today screen showing calories remaining in a ring, macro subtotals and the day’s meals

Scan. Portion. Done.
Under three seconds.

  1. Scan or search

Point the camera at a barcode, or type a few letters. Results come from the database on your phone, so there is nothing to wait for.

  2. Pick a portion

A label serving, a household measure like “1 cup” or “2 eggs”, or grams. The calories and macros update as you type.

  3. See what’s left

The ring on Today shows calories remaining. Tap any entry later to fix the portion, or copy yesterday’s breakfast in one tap.

The actual app

Warm, quick, and quiet.

Seven screens, no mock-ups. This is what ships. No streak-shaming, no upsell banners, no “premium” badges on half the buttons.

Built for the thirty seconds after a meal.

A tracker only works if logging is faster than not logging. Everything in Morsel is there to get a real number into the diary before you forget, and to stay out of the way the rest of the time.

Barcode scanning, free forever

The feature other apps moved behind a monthly plan is Morsel’s flagship freebie. Scan any package and the product, its calories and its serving size come up instantly, on the phone.

Works with no signal

400,000+ foods are bundled in the app: about 8,000 generic foods with household portions from USDA, and hundreds of thousands of branded products with barcodes from Open Food Facts. Basements, planes, trails — everything works.

Pay once, own it

Everything free is free forever. Morsel Unlimited is a single $9.99 purchase — less than two weeks of a monthly tracker subscription — and every future update is included.

Logging at the speed of life

Recents and favorites for one-tap re-logging, “Same as yesterday” on an empty meal, quick add when you only have a number, and a custom food from any search or scan miss in seconds.

Your food, your recipes

Custom foods with a serving name and grams, recipes with per-serving macros, and saved meals that log a whole breakfast in one tap. 10 custom items free; unlimited with the unlock.

Nothing leaves your phone

No account, no analytics, no ads. Your diary lives in a local database. The only thing Morsel ever sends is an anonymous crash report so we can fix bugs.

Two prices. Neither repeats.

Fair questions

Is Morsel really free?
Yes. The complete food database, barcode scanning, search, portions, the Today screen, goal setup and your full history are free with no time limit, no account and no ads. The only free cap is 10 custom foods and recipes. Morsel Unlimited is a single $9.99 in-app purchase that adds unlimited custom foods and recipes, saved meals, macro goals, trend charts, a weight log with Apple Health sync, and CSV export. There is nothing else to buy and no subscription.
Is barcode scanning really free forever?
Yes. It is the reason Morsel exists. Scanning works in the free tier with no daily limit, and it will never move behind the unlock.
Does it work offline?
Completely. 400,000+ foods ship inside the app, so search and barcode lookups never touch the network. There is no server for your diary to reach, which is also why there is no account.
Where does the food data come from?
Generic foods, with household portions like “1 cup” or “1 medium”, come from USDA FoodData Central (public domain). Branded products with barcodes come from Open Food Facts (© Open Food Facts contributors, used under the Open Database License). The derived database and the script that builds it are published in Morsel’s public repository, as the licence asks. If a product is missing or a label has changed, you can add or correct it as a custom food in seconds.
How does the calorie goal work?
Onboarding estimates your daily energy with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and an activity multiplier, then suggests a goal about 500 kcal below or above that for a gentle pace. It never suggests less than 1,200 kcal, you can type any number instead, and it is an estimate for self-tracking, not medical advice.
What does Morsel deliberately not do?
No micronutrient tracking, no AI photo logging, no diet plans, no social feed, no water or exercise logging, no cloud sync. Calories and the three macros, done excellently, is the whole job.
Where is my data stored?
In a local database on your phone, included in your normal iPhone backups. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. The only thing Morsel ever sends is an anonymous crash report when the app breaks, which contains none of your entries. Deleting the app deletes the data; the unlock stays with your App Store account.

Try it free.
Unlock it once.
Never get billed again.

No subscription, no account, no ads. Just a fast, honest calorie counter with the barcode scanner where it belongs: in the free tier.
